June Lake Area Guide

History

June Lake, California, born of volcanic activities over the span of hundreds of thousands of years has become a premiere ski resort, set among glistening mountain lakes and peaks that reach the sky, and it lies near Mammoth, just waiting for your arrival!

In the 1800’s it was a tiny mining town, but when the mines failed, June Lake eventually became a scenic resort, the destination of everyone who loves the outdoors. Like its neighbor Mammoth Lake, June Lake’s original purpose has changed over the years until the memory of the mining camp is history, one that June Lake residents embrace and keep close to their hearts while loving the current status of being a ski resort with something for everyone.

Parks and Attractions

Surrounded by the Inyo National Forest and nearby global attractions like Mono Lake and Yosemite National Park, while it may less famous than other destinations, people who’ve been there will tell you it’s the best mountain retreat on earth.

Winter sports are covered, with skiing, snowboarding, ice climbing all against the majestic backdrop of the mountains, but don’t think that June Lake is strictly for winter sports..

The original summer resort, when the snow begrudgingly cedes to the warmer temperatures, trout fishing, camping, hiking and sailing as well as climbing, sightseeing and bird watching are just a few of the things that guests love. With great National Parks and wilderness sanctuaries close by, June Lake takes you away from the hustle of the city and transports you to a beautiful, scenic land where you can relax.

Relaxation is key at June Lake where people come to enjoy the beautiful sights, weather and activities year round.

While June Lake is a great destination all by itself, don’t forget that it’s also known as a gateway to many other attractions, among them Ansel Adams’ Wilderness and the Devil’s Postpile National Monument as well as the Yosemite National Park and Mono Lake and Mono Basin Scenic Area.

Mono Lake

An ancient inland sea that’s filled with history, ten miles north of June Lake, you’ll find Mono Lake. Its salt water maintains a unique biosphere and has islands formed by volcanic activity with some very different shorelines. Be sure to take pictures the Tufas, unusual towers that are actually piled up mineral deposits, formed beneath the water when mineral rich spring water mixes with a salt water lake.

Yosemite National Park

Famous for its sheer canyon walls, granite peaks and domes and waterfalls, the dramatic scenery makes the trip worthwhile. Yosemite National Park can be a great complement to your June Lake visit.

The Ansel Adams Wilderness

Over 230,000 acres of wilderness, perfect for hiking await at Ansel Adams Wilderness. Renamed after the photographer’s death in 1984, among the notable trails and sites to see are the Ritter Range and Thousand Lake.
